Study Buddy and Study Group Finder

Collaborative learning and academic connections across disciplines

Learning together – across all higher education disciplines

The StudyGroups study-buddy and study-group concept is not limited to any one academic discipline. Its purpose is to help students from different courses and programmes connect around a subject, examination, project or longer-term learning goal. Collaborative learning can strengthen understanding, help sustain motivation and foster belonging within the university community.

Forms of collaboration

  • Study-buddy matching: two students preparing together regularly for a subject, examination or specific learning goal.
  • Small-group learning: subject-focused groups meeting regularly online, in person or in a hybrid format.
  • Exam and project preparation: working through problems, explaining ideas to one another, practising retrieval and preparing collaboratively.
  • International student inclusion: supporting collaboration between students of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds on shared courses.
  • Study routines and accountability: scheduled sessions, shared goals and constructive peer feedback.

Principles of effective collaborative learning

Effective study groups involve more than reading notes side by side. Useful approaches include active recall, peer explanation, practice questions, regular feedback and clearly structured goals. Balanced participation, an inclusive group environment and academic integrity are equally important.

Options for institutional partnership

Depending on institutional needs, a service may be designed around course- and year-specific matching, orientation materials, connections to peer mentoring and tutoring, and the ongoing review of participation and student feedback.

Institutional access, matching, group coordination and data protection arrangements can be tailored to the needs of each partner institution.

StudyGroups – dedicated website

Further information about the study-buddy and study-group concept is available on the dedicated StudyGroups introduction page. A future update of that site can connect this service more closely with the wider Human-Service higher education programme portfolio.
